Employment

Omaha has been able to boast an unemployment rate of less than 3% for the past several years, thanks in part to its extensive telecommunications and information service industry. It also offers excellent opportunities in the health care industry with two major medical hospitals, the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Creighton University Medical Center.

Five Fortune 500 companies call Omaha home for their headquarters including Berkshire Hathaway Inc., ConAgra, Inc. and Mutual of Omaha Companies. Thousands of miles of Union Pacific railroad track throughout its 23 state system are controlled at the Harriman Dispatch Center in the riverfront area. Hundreds of high tech industry jobs with area companies are posted daily on company web sites and internet-based job boards.

The Greater Omaha Economic Development Council (EDC) is the development arm for the Omaha Chamber of Commerce. The EDC represents an eight county metro area, working to increase business, jobs and investment in Greater Omaha. One component of the EDC is to maintain current data on manpower availability, wage rates and productivity levels.
